Anne discovered, after going swimming with Ariel -- though she'd suspected it long before -- that she really liked to walk barefoot on the beach, to feel the sand between her toes and the waves lap up over her ankles when she walked close to the ocean. She might not go swimming in her underthings where anyone else could see, but she could go without her shoes and stockings, and no one would chide her for it.

"This is lovely," she said, splashing up a little water with one foot and laughing softly. "Oh, this is just what I needed, Ariel, thank you."

Ariel smiled affectionately at Anne. "You don't have to thank me for taking you to the beach, Anne, but you're welcome."

She was dressed in a long flowery skirt, the bottom getting wet from the waves, and a baggy tank top she'd found in the clothing box. It was a perfect day for the beach, and Anne had seemed strangely melancholy. Ariel reached a hand out, hoping her friend, her girlfriend, would hold it while they walked.

Anne took it without hesitation, and would have even before they'd become... whatever they were now. But now it meant something especially, even if only the two of them knew it.

"Well, it was your idea," said Anne, "and you encouraged me to come. I ought to thank you, it's only right."

"If you must," Ariel said cheerfully, and swung Anne's hand a moment. "Do you want to look for seashells?"

[identity profile] island-anne.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Okay," said Anne easily, splashing through another wave. "What kind of seashells?" Seashells made her think of Billy, and the things he used to make out of them, but she wouldn't let that memory spoil this moment, even if Billy didn't do things like that anymore. "Did you collect seashells when you were still a mermaid?"

"Any kind we can fine," Ariel clarified, already scanning the wet sand for them.

"No, although we wore them as jewelry and as clothes. That was all I used to wear, two shells like a human bra," she explained, blushing faintly, though she wasn't sure why.

[identity profile] island-anne.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
"I can't imagine going around like that," says Anne, blushing herself. "Though I suppose if everyone looked like that, then it wouldn't be anything improper at all. I think... I think you would've looked very pretty like that."

[identity profile] sickof-swimming.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
"Thank you," Ariel said softly. Her blush deepened and the hand around Anne's tightened briefly. "My tail was a blue-green color. I like to imagine that if you were a mermaid yours would be dark blue, and you would wear emerald shells in your hair like a circlet."

[identity profile] island-anne.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
"You've imagined me as a mermaid?" said Anne, giving her a shy smile. "Oh, I can hardly even imagine what that might be like. It must be so very different from living on land, like we do."

[identity profile] sickof-swimming.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
"A few times," Ariel admitted, looking a bit sheepish. "I guess it's a little silly, but I wish I could share it with you, even for just a day."

[identity profile] island-anne.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 09:11 am (UTC)(link)
"It's not silly," Anne assured her. "It's sweet, and oh, I do wish you could show me, but we'll just have to settle for you telling me about it instead."

[identity profile] sickof-swimming.livejournal.com 2006-09-07 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes, and that's not so bad either. I like telling you." Ariel leaned over a moment and picked something up. It was a small spiral shell and she offered it to Anne, smiling at the other girl in adoration.

[identity profile] island-anne.livejournal.com 2006-09-07 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, that's so pretty!" said Anne admiringly. "Perhaps I could use some pretty shells to decorate my new home. Do you think that would look nice, decorating with shells? At least we could be certain we'd never run out."

[identity profile] sickof-swimming.livejournal.com 2006-09-07 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
"I think that's a great idea!" Ariel exclaimed, her face brightening as if it could brighten even more than it already was. "We could make it look like my room back home."

[identity profile] island-anne.livejournal.com 2006-09-07 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
"And I would like to get some fabric from the clothing box for some curtains as well," said Anne excitedly. "And I need to find a new sewing needle, the one I had was lost during the hurricane. But I'm certain I could make something, or at least find someone who could make me one."

[identity profile] sickof-swimming.livejournal.com 2006-09-07 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
"A sewing needle helps you make curtains?" Ariel asked. "Can you show me how?"

[identity profile] island-anne.livejournal.com 2006-09-07 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
"Of course I can," Anne told her, swinging their hands a little. "Just as soon as I have one again. I can show you everything, Ariel. I want to show you everything."

[identity profile] sickof-swimming.livejournal.com 2006-09-07 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Ariel could hardly stand to wait, there were so many things she was sure she still didn't know. "Like what, what do you want to show me most?"

[identity profile] island-anne.livejournal.com 2006-09-07 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
"Poetry," said Anne, without a moment of hesitation. "Oh, I want to show you poetry, Ariel, I want to share all of my favourite passionate poems with you. Maybe in the evenings, when it's still light, we can read together again."

[identity profile] sickof-swimming.livejournal.com 2006-09-07 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
"I'd love to read poetry with you," Ariel replied. "Poetry and The Tempest? Sometimes they sound the same to me."

[identity profile] island-anne.livejournal.com 2006-09-07 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh yes," said Anne, "Shakespeare's plays were very much like poetry. And... and I have some wonderful love poems that I would dearly like to share with you if... if you'd like."

[identity profile] sickof-swimming.livejournal.com 2006-09-07 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Ariel blushed and swore she felt her heart skip a beat. "Yes," she said quietly, and repeated herself to make sure Anne heard her, "yes, I would like to hear them." She vowed to find some love poems of her own to share with Anne.

[identity profile] island-anne.livejournal.com 2006-09-07 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Then we'll do that," said Anne happily. She paused and looked up and down the beach to make sure they were alone, then gave Ariel a quick kiss. "Oh, I do hope you like them too."

[identity profile] sickof-swimming.livejournal.com 2006-09-07 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm sure I will," Ariel finally answered after a brief daze from Anne's kiss. It was much too short, though, and so Ariel leaned in and kissed her again, though this time she lingered.

[identity profile] island-anne.livejournal.com 2006-09-07 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
Anne laughed softly when Ariel pulled away again, a happy -- no, a delighted -- if nervous laugh. "I'm sure there are so many things that we could do together," she said. "Oh look is that another shell?"

[identity profile] sickof-swimming.livejournal.com 2006-09-07 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
Ariel looked a little perplexed at Anne's nervousness but didn't mind it, it was just the way Anne was and Ariel was sure he would feel more comfortable in time. In truth it made her a little nervous sometimes, too. "It looks like a pretty white one," she said, moving forward some to pick it up for Anne.
